zurich-based firm idA has just shared with us images of their recently-finished pavilion in the forest of grueningen – ‘the greenhouse botranical garden’. the design derives entirely from nature as opposed to the built environment. the primary structure is made up of 4 steel trees meant to extend the existing flora, arranged according to the naturally occuring voronoi tesselation whereby the footprint of the garden is a result of the lines drawn to equidistant to the various points (columns) on an undefined grid. at five meters in height, the metal branches extend out over the open space supporting a glass canopy that folds down into the ground sealing the greenhouse space. layers of etched transparent glass partitions delineate various rooms within the structure situated amidst the wild forest.
