‘fungi house’ is a site-specific proposal and winning project by spanish architects hugo anaximandro rodríguez rial and miguel angel lópez carro to be constructed at yarkyfest summer architectural festival 2015 in st, petersburg. combining artistic vision with sustainable design, the dwelling examines the parametric construction technologies required to build an habitable and temporary space. influenced by forms seen in nature, this work has been envisioned to be transportable and friendly to the surrounding environment.

concept design

the house consists of a series of horizontal and vertical ribs, composing the space and creating a singular unit covered by wooden panels. although it appears as an organic shape from the exterior, complex geometries predominate in the interior. overall, the massing is transformed according to ventilation and light specifications. respecting the 3-by-3 meter requirements of the brief, broadening the module halfway up provides extra volume. a skylight appears top of the structure as the last horizontal rib, illuminating and ventilating the unit. additional to this hole, fenestration is made in the enclosing surfaces, allowing the sun’s rays to permeate the inner space and face different directions to see the surroundings. the natural ventilation system incorporates grilles, producing a fresh circulation of oxygen through the bottom while hot air exits through the oculus. the wooden panels in façade are complemented not only by insulation, but also by ETFE. this double skin protects occupants from the rain and varying temperatures. furthermore, the building is oriented according to the pattern of the sun with methacrylate windows.

parametrization’s aim is mobility. thus, dividing the residence into several parts, including structure and façade, allows for an organized assembly and easy transport so it can be built virtually anywhere and can be stored taking up less space. computer programs have been used to design the construction, and to splitting it into the two previous categories. the process will begin by attaching the vertical ribs, joining them to the horizontal rings to negotiate a level of stability. after placing the panels, the façade can be completed and the voids that have been cut out of some of the pieces combine into a lockable door. below, a basement shaped to respect the top structure is to be built with laminated timber panels and longitudinal lumber parts (including neoprene tape) so the residential unit is lifted above the ground and rain may flow.
