H&P architects builds prototypical 'HOUSE' that can float on water or be lifted on stilts

in vietnam, H&P architects has completed an adaptable residential design that it says can be used as a prototype for a variety of sites around the world. called ‘HOUSE (Human’s Optional USE)’, the project comprises three main parts: a steel frame, wall and roofing options, and interior furnishings. the architects say that the design could be used to resettle people in need of housing, or could even be adapted to float in areas where flooding is common. the design team adds that the structure could be used as a multi-functional space to accommodate programs relating to education, healthcare, and community.

H&P architects explains that the steel structure has been designed so that more floors can be added if necessary. the design of the frame also allows the house to be elevated on stilts, for mountainous terrain, or supported by barrels so that it can remain buoyant on water. meanwhile, the materials used for the walls, roofs, and doors can be chosen depending on the suitability of the region and climate in which the project is sited.

it is estimated that the installation of rooftop solar panels would produce twice as much electricity as required for common equipment used in a conventional household, with the amount of residual electricity able to be stored or traded. in addition, the roof has a sprinkler system to clean and cool the roof during hot summer days. internally, the structure can be fitted out in accordance with the conditions and needs of each occupant. for the prototype, the architects installed netted ceilings for relaxation within the open plan interiors. see other projects by H&P architects on designboom here.
