holon arkitektur's flokehyttene cabins offer panoramic views of the norwegian coast

holon arkitektur has completed five timber cabins in the municipality of sveio on the norwegian coast. located 30 minutes from the city of haugesund, the ‘flokehyttene’ cabins are embedded into the natural landscape next to the ryvarden lighthouse. designed to be as resilient to the elements as possible, the structures are triangular in both plan and profile to protect occupants from the region’s strong winds.

commissioned by the haugesund tourist association, holon arkitektur designed the structures to tread lightly on the landscape without leaving a permanent mark on the terrain. the client asked for a series of small, self-service cabins that offered as much flexibility as a possible. internally, each of the units has a large window that presents a panoramic view along the coastline and beyond. each structure has its own kitchen, living room with fireplace, and toilet.

the setting marks the place where, in the year 869, floke vilgerdsson sailed out as one of the first to settle on an unnamed island, which he later named ‘iceland’. each of the cabins are named after people who had an important place in vilgerdsson’s life: his grandfather horda-kåre, mother vilgjerd, daughters geirhild and tjogerd, and faxe who joined him on his expedition. see other cabin projects on designboom here, including ‘woodnest’ — a treehouse also in norway.
