hofmandujardin‘s ‘villa tonden’ is a wood-clad holiday retreat set within a pine forest in the netherlands. comprising three archetypical house-shaped volumes, the residence is designed to harmoniously coexist with the surrounding nature. each of the three volumes encloses unique interior spaces with specific qualities, while sliding doors ensure seamless internal connections between them.all images by matthijs van roon, © hofmandujardin
hofmandujardin designed ‘villa tonden’ as an escape from the rush of the city, where occupants can enjoy a laid-back time amidst the rich dutch nature. the project is located in a forested area in tonden, while its characteristic appearance allows it to perfectly fit into the open spot surrounded by pine trees. its three wood-clad volumes create distinct places around the house, while the façades embrace different terraces which overlook the encircling fields and the woods.
the three individual volumes of ‘villa tonden’ create unique interior spaces, connected to each other, and to the exterior landscape, via the use of sliding doors. from the entrance hall, which is complete with a reading window, one steps into the living room, where openings oriented in three directions allow this space to follow the sun during the day. there, two large glass sliding doors open up to an east and a west terrace and blur the lines between the inside and outside.
the timber roof is left visible inside, emphasizing the height of the structure. the living room forms the heart of the holiday retreat, inviting for all night family diners or warm and cosy evenings around the fireplace. the master bedroom, complete with a private bathroom, features a big window that offers unobstructed views towards the surrounding forest. the children’s bedroom features four built-in bunk bed nooks located in front of another big window that allows the kids to observe birds and other animals from their beds.
hofmandujardin has designed each space in ‘villa tonden’ with a unique relation to the surrounding nature. besides the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom on ground floor, the house has two additional guest bedrooms in the attic. both of these bedrooms feature a skylight to watch the stars and tree tops.
