from now until august 4, 2019, tokyo’s TOTO GALLERY·MA hosts an exhibition by japanese architect hideyuki nakayama. titled ‘, and then’, the exhibition features various films that convey aspects of nakayama’s architecture that cannot be communicated through architectural models and drawings. ‘each of the films mainly features how each architecture we had built in the past spent a period of time we architects knew nothing about,’ says the japanese architect. ‘maybe it would be more accurate to call this a ‘screening’ rather than an ‘architectural exhibition’.’

TOTO GALLERY·MA has been turned into a mini-theater showing five short films specially shot for this exhibition by five movie directors. images of the filmmaking process, drawings, and architectural models shown in the films are also on display. how is each architecture used by its occupants after completion?, asks hideyuki nakayama — who thinks that the state of architecture after ‘completion’ is vitally important.

consequently, each of the short films reveals how time flows in the architecture and its surrounding context. ‘we architects cannot interfere with the flow of time or ‘, and then’ what goes on in architecture after completion,’ continues nakayama. ‘each film was therefore shot and edited by other people and not by us. I would be happy if you could come to this exhibition as if coming to a film theater’. see other projects by hideyuki nakayama, including O house, on designboom here. meanwhile, a book has been published to accompany the exhibition.
