herzog de meuron royal college of art campusherzog & de meuron has been selected to build the royal college of art’s state-of-the-art £108 million battersea south campus. in winning the contest, the swiss architecture firm held off competition from diller scofidio + renfro and studio gang, among other star names. the facility will allow the school to expand its expertise into the fields of science, technology, and intelligent mobility — growing themes in the world of design.

the RCA, whose brief called for a strategic design approach, praised herzog & de meuron’s design for its understanding of the potential for the battersea site, and its intention of making new connections and foreseeing the possibilities for sustainable place-making. architect pierre de meuron remarked that the battersea site offers ‘an opportunity to rethink the RCA campus and establish the patterns of connectivity and organization that will make a successful building’.
