helsinki city council has voted against controversial plans for guggenheim helsinki, a decision that effectively ends any hope of realizing the project. after a long debate, councilors voted 53–32 against moreau kusunoki’s charred timber proposal, which was unveiled in june 2015. the idea of building a guggenheim in finland was first floated in 2011, with the subsequent design competition attracting a record 1,715 entries.

according to the helsinki times, the solomon r. guggenheim foundation and the guggenheim helsinki supporting foundation have agreed not to draw up another proposal for funding the museum project. ‘we are disappointed that the helsinki city council has decided not to allocate funds for the proposed guggenheim helsinki museum, in effect bringing this project to a close,’ richard armstrong, director of the solomon r. guggenheim foundation, told the newspaper.

titled ‘art in the city’, the winning design by french practice moreau kusunoki architectes was composed as a series of charred timber-clad pavilions, each responding to the existing city grid. the scheme would have required the city to pay around €80 million, with private donations funding the remainder of the €146 million needed.
