conceived not only as a place to rest in the shade for people collecting wild fruits, the ‘guallecos tactical observation deck’ by pablo rojas bottner also acts as a protector of the land’s soil that has been exposed after successive clearing of the surrounding forest. the landscape in the rural gualleco, maule region in chile has undergone different processes of transformation, greatly affecting the biodiversity of the native insignis pine forest and its ground fertility. the small structure is made entirely of raschel mesh, a typical material of agricultural areas in the central valley, as it allows water to pass through to the ground in a controlled manner and also reduces it from capturing morning dew. both the structure and the floor are made of recycled wood from previous constructions in the area, and were protected using burned oil. the seats were built with retrieved tree debris and painted with cal. the project is intended to be the first in a series arranged throughout the territory, in which its dual function of protecting the ground and serving as a place for rest hopes to help save the remaining natural landscape.
