this hotel by GS design brings the style of mykonos to china's island coast

a pure white hotel on china’s sunny hainan island

architecture practice GS design proposes a fluid ‘sumei skyline boutique hotel‘ along the sunny coast of sanya, a city on china‘s hainan island. the architecture takes shape in celebration of the vast, sparkling seascape and crashing waves. the team notes that the hotel‘s facade with its rounded apertures are informed by the ocean waves rising and falling along the shore. meanwhile, the interiors are framed by layered, curved openings, eventually looking outward onto the blue horizon beyond.

the ‘sumei skyline boutique hotel’ by GS design (see more here) hosts a sculptural lounge which integrates a shallow water feature. the undulating profile of this pool takes inspiration from the area’s winding coastline and is crafted into a multifunctional platform with a rich visual effect layering the pool and the ocean. these layered, curving spaces and the vivid blues of the ocean and sky are enhanced by a palette of pure white tones. the design team notes: ‘we work to craft the space into a timely and sophisticated art piece with a long lifespan of usage by adopting this classic color.’

bringing mykonos to china’s island coast

GS design curates the interiors of its ‘sumei skyline boutique hotel’ to precisely frame the blue sky, vast ocean, beach, and palms within its arching openings. meandering throughout the consecutive arches, visitors experience an atmosphere of pure white, with vivid natural scenes cinematically opening along the way. a rooftop deck integrates seating and hot springs bathing areas, aiming to suggest the atmosphere and style of mykonos. with the shallow water mirroring the sky, the team designs the space as a sunny retreat which merges art and nature.
