today, june 17th, 2021, google is opening its first-ever physical retail store in new york city. located in chelsea in 15th street and 9th avenue, the new space will provide customers with hand-on interaction with google’s lineup of devices and services — from the pixel phones and nest products to fitbit wearables and pixelbooks. to make the opening even more grandiose, the tech giant has achieved with this store LEED platinum, the highest sustainability certification in design and construction.

‘as we began the process to create our first retail store, the number of details to consider was daunting, but the opportunity at hand was amazing,’ said google in a blog post. ‘we wanted our first store to reflect the same approach we take to designing our products: making sure they’re always helpful to people. the result is a space we believe is warm and inviting, while providing new ways to celebrate and experience google through our phones, displays, speakers, wearables and more.’
every element of the new york google store was selected for their sustainability characteristics. for example, the veneer on the walls has been responsibly sourced while each lighting fixture is energy efficient. the custom cork and wood furniture was created locally in brooklyn and the carpeting was manufacturer with recycled materials. this, together with other details, makes this store one of the fewer than 215 retails spaces in the world to have achieve the LEED platinum ranking.
visitors are welcomed by physical and digital products that line the store’s windows. once inside, a light-filled space hosts a 17-foot-tall- circular glass structure called the google imagination space. here customers can interact with screens and learn more about the company’s products and technologies. for those who are not sure where to start, an expert store team is available to answer questions, offer repairs and troubleshoot issues on the spot.
