cantilevering annex extends sonnenwinkel house

In the heart of Leipzig, Germany, sits the two-story Sonnenwinkel House with a striking cantilevering form. The project by Carolus Zschieschang extends an existing residential structure with a design that harmonizes its urban location with modern housing concepts and sustainable construction methods. The new annex hides behind the original structure and surprises visitors as they approach it from the side with a projecting upper floor. Its opaque outer walls are clad with pre-greyed, vertically arranged larch boards of varying widths and depths, inducing a dynamic facade that changes with the time of the day and weather conditions, and lending the volume a levitating affect. Inside, the interior exudes a bright and airy ambience marked by light and natural tones and textures.

nature materials and airy tones invide the outdoors in

Sonnenwinkel House’s ground floor facade predominantly comprises floor-to-ceiling glazing, accenting by wooden columns and a concrete base covered with aluminum panels. Stepping inside, architect Carolus Zschieschang has created a ‘flexible and open space’ oriented directly towards the garden to offer a seamless transparency and connection between the indoors and outdoors. The rear wall is marked by a wide lift and slide door for easy access to the garden. The upper floor, in contrast, offers reduced transparency to offer residents privacy in the bedroom. Here, another wide door leads to a balcony overlooking the garden from three sides.

The materiality inside is a fusion of natural and airy tones in harmony with the facade and engulfing nature of the garden. The wooden construction has been left visible, and elements such as the columns have been left untouched with their natural color, while the beams have been painted a transparent white to brighten up the rooms while allowing the wood texture to exude through.
