explore the artist’s legacy

Much of Georgia O’Keeffe’s most iconic work was born from her love affair with the American southwest and the otherworldly landscapes of New Mexico. The place offered the artist respite from mental health struggles and a new beginning following an early period of grief in her life. Most of her time in New Mexico was spent at her home and studio Abiquiú, a vast and remote region of red rock formations just north of Santa Fe. O’Keeffe moved to her Santa Fe home, Sol y Sombra (Sun and Shadow), just two years before her death in 1986 at age 98.

a santa fe oasis is listed for sale

In 2000, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen had purchased Georgia O’Keeffe’s Santa Fe home Sol y Sombra. Following his passing in 2018, the Paul Allen Estate hosted a record-breaking auction of his artworks to ultimately raise an astonishing $1.5 billion — the highest ever amount collected from an art sale. The majority of the revenue was donated to philanthropic causes. Now, Sol y Sombra is listed for sale.

The home and its 20-acre plot was originally listed in 2021 for $22.6 million. More recently, the estate has reduced its asking price to $15 million.

inside sol y sombra: georgia o’keeffe’s final home

Those who have visited Georgia O’Keeffe’s Abiquiú home and studio may note that Sol y Sombra has lost much of the artist’s spirit — while its predecessor had been preserved in a manner that reflects her midcentury modern style and austere way of life, the 21-bedroom Sol y Sombra opens up with adobe walls and exposed timber beams. It has also been furnished with large landscape photographs and wall-to-wall carpeting, while O’Keeffe’s artist studio has become an event center with a modernized conference room.
