Aurora Design’s Chun Sheng Jewelry store revives old building

Aurora Design undertook the renovation of an old residential building in central Kunming, transforming it into the Chun Sheng Jewelry store. Located in a bustling neighborhood, the design harmonizes the old and new, introducing a fresh architectural narrative. Chun Sheng Jewelry focuses on high-quality original gemstone designs. The brand maintains control over the production process with its own factory, ensuring meticulous craftsmanship from design to finished product.

The young owner integrates natural beauty and an artistic lifestyle into the jewelry designs, creating an original brand characterized by warmth and vitality. Inspired by local culture, the interior design incorporates ‘spring’ through strategic lighting. This approach highlights the charm of Kunming, also known as the ‘Spring City.’ The building’s original frame remains unchanged to blend with the surroundings, while the interior is transformed into an open, airy space through modular sections and the removal of load-bearing walls. An extended terrace and outdoor display space on the south side introduce natural light, connecting the previously enclosed environment with nature and enhancing the sense of spring.

The influx of light evokes the essence of spring, capturing the passage of time through playful light patterns. Sunlight filters through glass doors on both sides, infusing the interior with spring’s energy. A large-scale art installation greets visitors, evoking a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. Inspired by nature and plant root systems, this installation spreads throughout the space. A wooden bar counter and a tea area provide a comfortable space for customers. This space, initially an office, has become an integral part of the jewelry store.

design captures time through playful light patterns on walls

The staggered, overlapping triangle area disrupts the fluid dynamism. The irregularly shaped ceiling and restrained lighting create a tranquil atmosphere, with alternating curves and sharp edges on the walls echoing the jewels’ sculptural qualities. This design guides the sensory experience of visitors while capturing the passage of time through playful light movements, while warm micro-cement finishes and recessed surfaces enhance the interaction of light and shadow.

Marble flooring and wooden furniture create a cozy ambiance, with a color palette of warm white, light wood, and dark wood reflecting different stages of spring. The wooden furniture in the space, originally designed by Aurora Design, integrates functionality with aesthetic appeal. A customized ‘jewelry room’ allows customers to explore their creative ideas, transforming their thoughts into unique, handcrafted pieces. Plants from the original site and new additions create a ‘natural moment’ in the workplace, providing a calming environment. The gray space, a wooden installation adjacent to the plant, overlaps multiple geometric forms, serving as a connection between outside and inside.

The staircase connecting the second and third floors features a restrained color palette and minimalist geometric shapes, maintaining the balance and tranquility of the space. Rectangular windows and skylights introduce natural light, with varying intensities to meet different functional needs, from jewelry identification to creating a warm ambiance. Cork grilles separate functional areas while ensuring spatial continuity. The overall color scheme centers on the jewelry, with warm and neutral tones highlighting balance, warmth, and calmness. The facade, predominantly white, highlights its harmonious coexistence with the surroundings. The use of white as the undertone emphasizes the interplay of light and shadow. Inside, the color palette centers on the jewelry, incorporating warm and neutral tones to underscore the themes of balance, warmth, and calmness. The creative team at Aurora Design uses simple colors and light to express the brand concept, integrating personalized expression into the urban texture. The design achieves a harmonious balance, reflecting the innovative spirit of Chun Sheng Jewelry.
