GD-lighting design looks to ancient greece in shenzhen sports center

the concept behind GD-lighting design’s work for the ‘universiade 2011 sports center’ — designed by GMP architekten — evolved from the ancient greek roots of crystal. krystallos, translated to chinese, is water of pure white; a notion that was expressed into a cohesive lighting solution for the sports complex in shenzhen, china.

drawing upon the relevance of crystal to the architectural design, as well the mineral’s characteristic color association with purity, justice, and peace, GD-lighting thought to represent the spirit of the universiade. unfortunately, plans for opening and closing ceremonies for the 26th summer event were relocated to a different complex.

however, the final outcome fulfilled all requirements — including an integrated RGB LED system. the white illumination, and corresponding shading fabric, creates a uniform brightness that has no impact on broadcasting. the ‘shenzhen sports center’ was completed in 2011.
