line+ studio's wellness retreat has a pool overlooking china's rural landscape

line+ has added three recreational structures to a complex of buildings in rural china. located on mount tai in dongximen, a typical mountain village in the country’s shandong province, the project seeks to serve as a sustainable catalyst for development in the region, which, despite its natural beauty, is suffering from depopulation and economic depression.

conceived by line+ studio as a ‘strategic response to nature’, the ‘jiunvfeng bubble pool’ joins a visitor center that the firm completed at an earlier date. meanwhile, accommodation for visitors is found at the foot of the mountain. pictured here, the latest addition comprises three separate volumes: a pool, a gym, and changing rooms. the semi-outdoor pool area features a white roof canopy that rises from the ground and protrudes towards the mountains.

the gym is oriented to face the village, while the structure containing the changing rooms is more private and introverted. ‘far away from the hustle and bustle of the city and the high-speed pace of life, you may find a place for yourself in the mountains and forests,’ say the architects. ‘jog, bathe, meditate, and return to nature and dialogue with the distant mountains.’ see more projects by line+ studio on designboom here, including a renovated hotel, also in rural china.
