massimiliano and doriana fuksas have been selected to build jerusalem’s new international congress center. the scheme will form part of the ‘city gateway’ project, which constitutes the expansion of jerusalem’s central business district, which extends from yafo street to the government center and the national museum. the new international congress center will be built around the existing ussishkin hall building, which will be redesigned to host international shows and conferences.

the project designed by massimiliano and doriana fuksas comprises a total area of 270,000 square meters and includes: a congress center; a 10-storey hotel with about 800 rooms; a multi-storey office building; two 36-storey business towers; residences; ground floor retail outlets; and an underground car park that can be used to load and unload goods. the entire scheme will be articulated around a public square referred to as the ‘ICC plaza.’

in addition to pedestrian, cycle, and vehicular access, the site will be also easily accessible via the city’s existing transport infrastructure. according to the design team, particular attention was paid to the sustainability of the project in terms of energy saving, the life cycle of the products, the healthiness of the interior spaces, and the harmony with the surrounding urban context. meanwhile, the use of local stone for the façades allows the project to integrate into its surrounding context.
