Ruben Muedra Arquitectura designs Wind House in Canals

Wind House by Ruben Muedra Arquitectura is situated on the outskirts of Canals’ urban area in Spain, enveloped by olive and citrus groves. Designed in adherence to traditional typologies, the dwelling harmonizes with its surroundings while accommodating a singular floor plan. Comprising four prismatic volumes, the design effectively delineates and organizes outdoor spaces, each dedicated to distinct interior functions. Interconnected by an interstitial lobby, these blocks extend in varied directions, forming a cross-shaped configuration that links exterior and interior realms seamlessly.

The main program unfolds on a single level, with exceptions for the night block and service areas facing north, utilizing the terrain’s depression to incorporate two levels. Height differentials correspond to the function of each space, with the most significant areas featuring lofty ceilings. Topped by an inward-sloping roof adorned with Arabic tiles, the house exudes a rural typology characteristic of the region. This roof design enhances the depth of each block, elongating their perceived geometry. A central longitudinal volume serves as the nexus, offering expansive views of the surrounding fields.

Wind House splits into four blocks housing the living functions

Dividing the house into two wings, the central core houses the day areas, while the other wings accommodate the night spaces and service functions. Porches attached to three of the blocks extend the living areas outdoors, providing diverse orientations for different times of the day. The swimming pool, seamlessly integrated into the landscape, is connected to the house via paved and artificial grass areas. Utilizing light and white finishes typical of Mediterranean architecture, the design contrasts with the area’s red clay hues.

Continuity is emphasized through the use of continuous stone flooring from indoors to outdoors, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. White ceilings integrate air conditioning installations and indirect lighting, sound and audiovisual systems. Wind House by Ruben Muedra Arquitectura responds to the environment maintaining a minimalist aesthetic with a Mediterranean identity.
