bangkok-based architecture studio foundry of space has completed a factory outlet store for the biggest plastic products manufacturer in thailand. commissioned by srithai superware, the design involves the transformation of a run-down depot into a 4,000 square meter retail interior. named the ‘srithai super outlet’, the building brings together a wide range of products, including kitchenware and furniture under one roof.

located on a prominent highway, the client wanted an eye-catching design able to accommodate a number of different programs. an open-plan retail space, display areas, a warehouse, a customer service counter, a facility for children, rental spaces for shops, service areas and an exhibition space are all included as part of the project.

the existing structure was predominantly retained and strengthened, with roof tiles replaced by metal sheeting. perhaps most striking is the structure’s new cladding, dissected into a series of vertical stripes that reference the company’s plastic production processes. the bands then act as a horizontal grid system, in which generic components of folded aluminum panels are inserted. by gradually shifting each strip, sinuous curves emerge from the flat surface.

the flow of horizontally stacked components continues inside, covering a welcoming exhibition dedicated to srithai’s 50-year history. within the space, folded elements transform themselves to become display boxes containing awards achieved by the company. they continually propagate onto the ceiling and become light fixtures, illuminating the foyer during evening hours.
