foster + partners make shortlist for new london metropolitan police HQ

AHMM and foster and partners are among five other well known firms shortlisted for the new metropolitan police headquarters on london’s victoria embankment. the big-name practices were picked from a large selection of national and international candidates. they will be joined by; allies and morrison, keith williams architects and lifschutz davidson sandilands.

the five finalists will present their proposals to a judging panel in september this year, in the hope of securing the important new development.

the project will see the metropolitan police service move out of their current site at new scotland yard home at 10 broadway. in a bid to increase savings efficiencies hundreds of officers and support staff will be relocated to the smaller 1937 building, named after its architect ‘william curtis green’. currently owned by the mayor’s office for policing and crime, the famous revolving sign will signal that it’s scotland yard. the new location is nestled between the whitehall conservation area, the ministry of defense and the norman shaw building. facing onto the victoria embankment the site looks out the river thames to westminster bridge, london county hall, and the london eye. the brief called for a modern upgrade to the police service headquarters and strategy on how to relocate all of its employees to the proposed site. the historic building is in close proximity to the ministry of defense and the new design will also house up to 950 cells, in the hope to make custody times shorter.

the police director of real estate development, roger harding said ‘the competition generated considerable interest…. and the selection process was exceptionally difficult… we look forward to seeing a winning design that respects the history of the curtis green building while reflecting the mps need to modernize our estate.’
