Nabel Technology & Culture Experience Center

Shanghai and Taipei-based architecture firm CROX has completed the headquarters for ceramic tile company Nabel in Hangzhou, China. Drawing influence from the historical background and topography of the region, the team has designed a brand culture exhibition hall housed under a flowing mountain-shaped roof.

freehand sloping roof becomes the protagonist of the project

The design is based on a square, and the space hopes to echo the spirit of ‘Cong’, one of the six sacrifice ritual tools recorded in testaments from the Liangzhu Neolithic jade culture. The distinctive architectural configuration is based on the concept of a ’round sky and square earth’, as well as on the shapes of the surrounding mountains. As a result, flowing curves and organic shapes characterize CROX’s design, while a freehand sloping roof becomes the protagonist of the project.

The architects have also created an exterior facade composed of large-scale ceramic slabs and transparent curtain walls. The slabs are based on ‘SIMM-TEC’ technology developed and produced by Nabel. The vertical solid plates and glass curtain walls highlight the topographical sense of the building while establishing an interesting rhythmic pattern.

a ridge of mountains on the ground

The entire Nabel Technology & Culture Experience Center appears like a ridge of mountains on the ground. At the front of the building, a pool surface produces mesmerizing reflective visuals. Upon approaching the establishment, people follow a winding path and access the open entrance. In front of them, they see rays of light permeating the interior through the gap of the arc ceramic walls.

In the art exhibition hall, one can get acquainted with different ceramic cultures. Visitors can follow the arc stairs to reach the upper garden, and experience the natural atmosphere within the quiet atrium. From there, guests have the opportunity to fully appreciate the building’s internal and external articulation, as well as its character which integrates space, culture, and industry.
