FCC arquitectura renovates rural portuguese farmhouse

in northern portugal, local studio FCC arquitectura has completed the renovation and extension of a rural stone farmhouse. as the existing structure was in severe disrepair, the design team chose to demolish its dilapidated interior and only use the remaining shell to contain the new dwelling. at the rear of the two-storey property, additional floor space houses further living accommodation, presenting sweeping views of the region’s rolling terrain.

a garage, a laundry and a storage compartment are found at ground floor level, with an internal stairway leading residents and guests upstairs. the upper storey is divided in two parts, with a kitchen-diner at the southern edge of the plot separated from the sleeping quarters. primary living space is contained within a large lounge that overlooks an elevated garden at the rear of the property, providing an open area for external recreation.
