the sunny coast of alicante has become a constantly transforming environment bringing in locals and tourists from all walks of life coming for the sea, the vegetation, temperate climates, and public services. the ‘casa baladrar’, estudio langarita navarro‘s latest project, offers a haven in the sought-after city of benissa as a timeshare in the summer and a residence for retirees in the winter. situated on a former farm, the house was placed upon a flat section of land in the middle of a steep hill- an opportune position to enjoy unobstructed views of the ocean while remaining embedded in the local flora. private bedrooms are located on the lower level below grade with direct access to the swimming pool and garden, while the living area and kitchen are above ground as a central connection point between the peripheral terraces. a stunning faceted exposed concrete roof caps the structure, a contemporary element among the more traditional white-washed walls, tile floors, and stone barriers and walkways. the thick materials’ thermal properties are necessary to maintain comfortable temperatures- nonetheless the home can be cooled by opening the various expanded metal screens for cross ventilation. the material selection also makes it the ideal house for those who don’t want to spend time or money in maintenance.
