madrid-based practice DOSIS has recently completed ‘casa V’ in la coruña of northern spain, an extension for a family of three generations that were living in the same home built in the 1960s. the sinuous concrete form that originates at the existing home is intended for the two younger generations, affording private and individual spaces within a unified building. the fluid exterior wall’s playful path is informed by the activities inside, rather than informing them. it is devoid of excessive color or texture so as to serve as a neutral front within which familial life is the protagonist.

each fold offers new views, different lighting, reveals terraces, rooftop gardens and covered patios each with their own unique relationship to the site. the materials and insulation systems create a responsive thermal mass that helps maintain steady temperatures without the use of additional energy. due to the size and orientation of the windows, the interior can always be maintained warm by natural light in the winter time, and can be closed off in the summer months to maintain a cooler internal climate.
