amid the mountainous landscape of jackson, wyoming, a family house called ‘logan pavilion’ gently settles into its environment thanks to weathered materials and a vernacular form. the dwelling is home to eric logan, design principal at CLB architects, and his wife, two college-age daughters, and their pets. first built in 1997, logan has recently renovated the house to upgrade the kitchen and roof.

the residence comprises the main house and a separate guest house, which was added in 2001. the main house contains an open plan kitchen, living and dining space, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a detached garage to accommodate logan‘s many collections including cars, bikes, motorcycles, tools, and vinyl records.

the main house is characterized by its long, rectilinear form and gable roof, which makes reference to vernacular hay sheds. for the exterior, logan selected materials that would weather over time to blend into the surroundings: principally cedar timber and rusted steel sheet. for this most recent intervention, the architect replaced the shingle roof with a metal roof. this metal roof was logan’s original vision for the house, however, he was faced with strong opposition from the neighbors and it was only approved in 2020.

inside, the interiors follow the same aesthetic and color-palette as the outside. economical finishes such as oiled masonite wall paneling, raw MDF cabinetry, and an oiled concrete floor are combined with carefully curated furniture pieces to create a contemporary and sometimes rugged feel.

the building also settles into the landscape thanks to wooden decking that extends out from the social heart of the home. under a deep roof overhang, the family can enjoy outdoor living while being sheltered from the sun or snow. throughout the family’s time on the property, they have responsibly created a more diverse landscape by integrating plants and trees for shade and to provide habitat for wildlife.

the project shows the potential of existing buildings, and how, with simple and thoughtful design solutions, they can be adapted to suit the changing needs of a family. since 1997, logan pavilion has evolved and continued to change. and for this newest iteration of his home, logan calls it the ‘new black sweater’.
