the ‘jade residence’ by elizabeth emerson + mark lawrence of american e/l studio is an eco-friendly beach condo located in wildwood, new jersey. the holiday retreat has been assembled as an additional unit, positioned directly adjacent to an existing motel that was already on the site. the vacation getaway replicates the original model in both its ground and upper flooring, however it has been upgraded with sustainability features integrated throughout the new design. the residences feature a double-height living room that consists of two large openings on either side, offering uninterrupted views towards the ocean and the motel pool.

light monitors provide a constant level of diffused light into the interior, while also maximizing solar gain on collectors placed on the outside. a geo-thermal system and passive ventilation help to reduce heating and cooling extremes. customized window units are fitted with hurricane-resistant rain screens with perforations at the height of adults and children. the additional structure has helped to transform the beach residence through attention to material details and adaptive environmental building solutions.
