DUTS design installs infinite 'mobius ring' in beijing shopping mall with large-scale kids town

DUTS design has transformed a pre-existing supermarket into the family-friendly ‘livat’ shopping mall with a large-scale kids town situated in beijing, china. the design is based on the creation of a ‘mobius ring’, a unique infinite continuous two-dimensional single-sided disc structure in a three-dimensional space. reinterpreting the flow of people as a magical and infinite loop, and seeking to open endless spatial possibilities for all visitors, the project generates a relaxed, comfortable and special experience for the public.

since the project was originally a supermarket, it occupies a huge volume of 14,000 square meters, but only has two narrow entrances and exits at both ends. when the DUTS team observed the site, they considered not only the color and form of the space, but they also examined how they could activate this area through their new design. the architects’ intervention fully analyzes the height, distance, fluidity of the setting, through the digital translation of the geometric prototype of the ‘möbius ring’. the uniqueness of the ring combines different functions, opening up unlimited possibilities in a limited space, greatly increasing and opening up the commercial experience and display interface, making the walking and playing experience space endlessly extend.

the ‘skyline’ is composed of a zigzag and a flowing grid at the top, naturally directing visitors and creating an ‘infinite’ organic world. zones and sections of different scales are allocated throughout the kids’ town, where young visitors can sit, run, play, and relax under a ‘gentle envelopment’. the design unveils a series of ever-changing environments that stimulate the children, encouraging them to boost their imagination and creativity. hand in hand – the dual dimension of kids and adults this ‘mobius ring’ aims to please individuals of all ages.

the simplicity and elegance of adult aesthetics is maintained throughout the upper part of the interior. the white perforated aluminum plate and GRG material give a pure and elegant character to the space. meanwhile, the area below the line of sight appears vibrant, colorful and playful, welcoming children in. the kids’ environment takes shape as a  suspended space while incorporating a sense of enclosure, becoming a safe haven where they can linger. the interior is filled with a strong artistic sense and the arc-shaped forms enhance the intimacy of the setting. this design does not only allow the children to enjoy a peaceful yet interesting experience, but also offers pleasant visuals to all customers who enter the facilities.
