DNM ARCHITECTURE BUILDS HILLSIDE HOME

DNM Architecture settles a secluded, environmentally-sensitive home in the Californian hillsides of Marin County, northwest of San Francisco. Named Deer Park, the residence was realized after overcoming significant challenges with the site’s topography, mainly a large natural swale that runs through its center. Now stands a captivating two-story home with modernist interiors that overlook the nearby Mount Tamalpais.

Founded in 1999 by David Marlatt, DNM Architecture is an award-winning Sausalito-based design firm that always places the client and the environment at the center of their design process. Deer Park is sensitive to making as little environmental impact on the site as possible through thoughtful decisions on layout and materiality.

OVERCOMING SUBOPTIMAL TERRAIN

The primary dwelling is situated along the northeastern slope to maximize views over the surrounding hills. Across the swale, a two-car garage and an accessory dwelling unit are located on the southeastern side. The driveway runs along the site’s edge, connecting the two structures and leading visitors on a ‘procession of discovery’ as they roam the property. This layout leaves the swale untouched to preserve the natural flow of water through the site.

INSIDE ‘DEER PARK’ RESIDENCE

Stepping into the interior, the threshold and central access point leads directly to a large open plan living and dining area that reflect a Californian modernist’s dream. Full-width windows provide panoramic views across Marin County’s mountainous landscape, flood the space with natural lighting, and, together with the glazed doorways leading to a deck, literally facilitates indoor-outdoor living.
