new york-based practice diller scofidio + renfro has revealed the design for the ‘berkeley art museum / pacific film archive’ to be located adjacent to the university of california campus in berkeley, california, USA. positioned within the west crescent district, close to the BART transportation network, the new center will uphold cultural, educational and social functions for the community and transient visitors. the two separate institutions will be unified to operate within one facility.

the complex is comprised of an existing multi-story art deco building, industrial shed, in addition to the contemporary addition which connects the grounds. the museum’s galleries will be placed within the shed while the adjacent structure will house the film archive. the spaces will be differentiated with two diverse floor planes, the galleries will be excavated and recessed while the archive will be elevated.
