luca curci architects studio presents ‘desert cities’, a sustainable living proposal for hostile environments. the project aims to create a lifestyle built around energy saving, materials streamlining, respect for nature and enhanced human relationships. a series of symbiotic ‘identity-places’ as called by luca curci, are dispersed in an area forming an organic and articulated system. three macro architectural types, each built to different dimensions, functions, and inhabitants were designed following residential and architectural solutions which respect location, climate, and resources.
a series of symbiotic ‘identity-places’
the smallest ‘identity-spaces’ are built primarily for one or two individual households, and will be clumped together to form small communities of five families. slightly larger, middle size structures can host facilities such as research labs, administrative offices, and other various services. the third, and largest ‘identity-space’ is able to host complex communities with populations of 2,000 or more inhabitants along with the needed work, cultural, and social establishments.

‘desert cities’ aspires to redefine humans relation with the resources and characteristics of the environment in which they live. part of this is done by reconnecting to the surrounding area. the buildings will be made with natural eco-compatible materials sourced from the areas bordering the site. optimization of plentiful desert elements, such as sun and wind, will be used for energy. sustainable water consumption is possible through the reuse of waste water, rainwater recovery and production of drinking water through various solar powered processes. other refuse will be reused via recycling and composting. ‘desert cities’ is a reflection on new ways of social and economic organization.
