this holiday home by dutch practice de zwarte hond is based on the island of schiermonnikoog where the sustainable property frames the landscape of dunes and forestry. through maximizing space, the architects decided to build underground, allowing majority of the private spaces to be located beneath. the communal areas consist of a generous floor plan with the interiors defined and connected by the slanting roof. shaped like an ‘L’, the structure is orientated to capture the best views of the surrounding nature but provide natural shading. clad in larch wood of differing widths and different tones of grey, the timber is intended to age over time.
