maastricht-based design agency de nieuwe context has transformed the former studio of artist daan wildschut (1913-1995) into a contemporary guesthouse situated in limburg, the netherlands. the refurbishment forms an efficient residential space, while still preserving the open character of the atelier.

with light and color being very important aspects in wildschut’s work, de nieuwe context adopted these two elements as the focal axes of the renovation. the architects have preserved the large openings of the atelier, in order to ensure that natural sunlight permeates the interior. meanwhile, a bright green staircase allows occupants to access the second level, while also accommodating a series of storage cabinets. wooden details are installed throughout the interior to bring warmth into the intervention.
