david thulstrup transforms heritage copenhagen building into contemporary hotel for vipp

studio david thulstrup has transformed a heritage-listed former water pumping station with a towering chimney in copenhagen into the vipp chimney house, a cutting-edge contemporary hotel for danish design company vipp. while retaining the charm of the 1902-built architectural shell, the original, industrial space has been renovated with custom-designed pieces, including the dramatic U-shaped steel staircase, furniture, and door handles, products from the company, and curated art pieces.images by irina boersma and hampus berndtson

‘I wanted to add the personality, comfort and aesthetics of a private residence,’ explains david thulstrup, ‘I wanted people to feel at home.’ comprising two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large open plan kitchen, dining and living space in a total of 200 sqm, the project explores modern ways of living while showcasing vipp‘s brand universe. situated on the first floor, the bedrooms incorporate large glass panels with lush curtains that can be pulled for privacy, and overlook the atrium. the master bedroom is connected to a walk-in closet and has access to a small balcony, while the guest bedroom features integrated wood cabinetry and 4.5 m high frameless glass panels. additionally, there is an outdoor terrace with entrance from the first floor and a large terrace in the private garden.

the vipp chimney house is characterized by arch doors in steel-framed glass, custom terrazzo flooring, a modern steel staircase and open access to a private terrace. ceiling height amounts to 8.5 m in the atrium, while a skylight offers views towards the old chimney.
