nice-based architect cyril chênebeau has renovated and extended a rural property in the south of france. located near the small village of sclos de contes, the house is situated below an old pathway, on a slope made of several terraces populated with trees. the existing dwelling is a former cottage with only one room at its lower level, and built against a stone wall. the project includes the addition of a terrace, and flanks the existing structure with two white concrete blocks.

the interior of the new addition contains a double-height living room that creates a subtle balance with the renovated building. a second smaller volume serves as a light shaft which illuminates a shower cubicle, open to the elements above. windows on either side of the house provide both natural light and pleasant external views. the junction between the renovated house and its new extension appears as a void with a large angled glass window lending the project a sense of fluidity between internal and external space.
