establishing a strong relationship with its environment, ‘birkenhead house’ by new zealand-based practice crosson clarke carnachan architects serves as a family retreat, allowing its occupants to relax away from their hectic working lives. the home’s rectangular forms relate to neighboring buildings through a careful application of materials, scale and orientation. the triangular plot falls from the street towards the harbor’s edge forming a gradient that allows the house to be positioned in a manner comparable to its neighbors, maximizing views from the property across auckland’s inner harbor. in addition, the sloping roofs creating a continuous streetscape, falling towards the road in a style similar to that of adjacent properties.

the home’s program is divided between three storeys, with a lower ground floor containing four bedrooms, storage and bathroom facilities, a ground level which accommodates the kitchen, dining, main living areas and garaging and the upper floor housing the en-suite master bedroom, a large wardrobe and a study. terraces connect the primary living quarters with a swimming pool situated at the north side of the upper site.
