Mulazzo Washhouse Restoration by Architetto Gianluca Panichi

The project by Architetto Gianluca Panichi involves the reconfiguration of a building complex in need of restoration following the disastrous flood of 2011 in Mulazzo, Italy. Initial safety measures are implemented in the structure comprising a fountain, a covered washhouse, and a flight of steps connecting to the adjacent public park. Rather than pursuing a faithful reconstruction of the lost volumes, the development focuses on a balanced and respectful functional recovery, integrating the missing elements while reviving the site by harmonizing with its historical context. By crafting new structures and integrations made of ‘minimal’ materials such as concrete, corten steel, and stone, the project seamlessly merges the built volumes with a broader system of paths and equipped green areas.

elements of concrete, steel, and stone restore the complex

The area holds the memory of the event as visible traces mark the area. The restoration embraces the physical remnants that are recovered and integrated, repurposed with ‘minimal’ materials such as concrete, corten steel, and stone. The intervention aims for a comprehensive architectural, naturalistic, and functional enhancement of the area. The discreet yet evident interplay between architectural interventions and the landscape evokes a harmonious dialogue, bridging the gap between memory and newfound life. Designer Gianluca Panichi skillfully revitalizes the historically-rooted park and stream adorned with cascading waterfalls and crystalline pools. The project transcends the boundaries of conventional restoration and redefines the space by employing a thoughtful selection of materials and modifications.
