strange luxury, inside a hotel suite that's actually a dockyard crane

this apartment, built into the framework of a crane, allows for a unique perspective of amsterdam’s port, with its long and interesting maritime history. the crane — known as figee crane 2868 — was commissioned after its predecessors were destroyed in world war II, and had been in service up until 1979.

‘the yays – crane apartment’ may seem a bit strange for a luxury rental; yet, with travelers more and more keen on novel and alternative experiences, it might be just what they’re looking for. as the crane has been out of commission for so many years, with its fate uncertain, this project deserves applause for its reuse of such an unorthodox space. at the hotel’s opening ceremony, the last crane operator, commented on how happy he was to see the old structure get a ‘new life.’

designer edward van vliet refurbished this little cabin in the air by restoring the old parts and adding completely new ones, creating a space that’s both luxurious and a little unorthodox. managed by yays concierged boutique apartments, the hotel has a unique ability to bring the inhabitant right into the community, offering tremendously large industrial windows that offer unparalleled views of the city’s KNSM-island. in a very tangible way, the tourist becomes a part of the crane’s long history, creating memories to share forever. the whole thing feels a little like a children’s story book, and seems a rather happy ending for the little crane that could.
