concrete crown transforms 1978 grain silo in austria into wood pellet storing center

designed by obermoser + partner architekten & Hanno Schlögl

In collaboration with architect Hanno Schlögl, obermoser + partner architekten has transformed a 1978 grain silo in Austria into a modern hub for storing and trading wood pellets. The Gutmann Pellets Silo balances the preservation of the site’s industrial heritage with the integration of new functional elements, blending the old and new into a cohesive architectural monolith.

At the core of the redevelopment is a ‘crown’ — a glass box encased in precast concrete — resting atop the original structure. This extension honors the site’s architectural identity while creating a distinctive new silhouette. In addition, minimal external interventions ensure the building retains its authentic character.

Gutmann Pellets Silo enjoys an art lounge extension

Internally, obermoser + partner architekten and Hanno Schlögl strategically introduced a new staircase and elevator within the original raw structure, to preserve the original, industrial features. The Austrian studio also introduced a new art lounge to the rooftop, suitable for both business events and cultural gatherings. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views above the industrial complex and further, above the scenic surrounding landscape. Completed within a year, the renovation has turned this once-neglected industrial complex into a new landmark.
