IN TIME? by Studio Aditya Mandlik

Mumbai-based Studio Aditya Mandlik presents IN TIME? – a public art installation in Mannheim, Germany. The piece comprises seven pie-shaped spaces, each dedicated to a day of the week. Within these slices stand twenty-four luminous columns, adorned with solar panels that emit a radiant glow at various intervals. The dynamic landmark not only symbolizes the passing hour but also serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to combat climate change.

a monumental climate clock in Mannheim

Inspired by a strategic reinterpretation of a park in the area. IN TIME? by Studio Aditya Mandlik (find more here) emerges as a powerful symbol in the fight against climate change. The project transforms a conventional space into a dynamic hub of sustainability and creativity, inviting individuals to contemplate the pressing issue of our time. At its heart lies the Climate Clock, a monumental timepiece that reminds visitors of the dwindling time left to reverse irreversible environmental damage.

Generating an impressive 1077.6 MWh of energy annually, the landmark represents a beacon of hope, urging action towards a sustainable future. Comprising seven pie-shaped public spaces, each representing a day of the week, IN TIME? offers a unique mapping of time. Within these spaces stand clusters of 24 columns, symbolizing the hours of the day. As time progresses, these columns illuminate, creating a mesmerizing display that guides visitors over time from April to October.

Sustainable Design Principles at the Core of IN TIME?

The design of IN TIME? is not just aesthetically pleasing but also functional. The ground features a blend of abstract and non-abstract compositions, encouraging active engagement with the space. Each hour-column is meticulously crafted to respond to local conditions, with elements such as light cones, solar fins, and vertical gardens contributing to its functionality and sustainability.

Utilizing advanced parametric design, the installation maximizes energy production through innovative features such as inclined roofs and multi-junction solar cells. A significant portion of the energy generated is directed towards the city grid, supporting hundreds of households and powering essential components of the installation. Furthermore, IN TIME? aligns with key Sustainable Development Goals, including promoting well-being, ensuring access to sustainable energy, and combating climate change. By fostering a sense of urgency and collective action, the project highlights the importance of integrating sustainable practices into our daily lives.
