a multi-generational home remodels a village settlement

Raghuveer Kathpalia’s multi-generational family home in Gujarat, India, redefines the relation between residential architecture, its occupants, and its surrounding landscape by fostering a synchronous harmony. The unconventional design concept rethinks the traditional model of a rural settlement and approaches the act of building as an act of settling, creating a series of volumes, voids, and verandas that dialogue together and integrate the structure into the natural environment. With its simple geometry and earth tones, the home becomes a natural extension of its landscape, reconnecting its residents with the outdoors while rethinking the traditional Indian typology of a settlement.

a cluster of volumes and voids in harmony with nature

The project transforms two plots in a residential scheme in Sanand, a town close to Ahmedabad, to foster a close relationship with nature. Raghuveer Kathpalia’s approach to the project consciously shifts away from the traditional concept of a home that sees structures as mere occupants of space and where the landscape is divided into building and the plot. Instead, the architect considers the home at one with its context and allows both to take center stage.

As can be observed in certain settlements in Indian villages where different functions of a home are divided into individual structures, the project conceives a similar visual language to create a series of volumes and voids. As such, the home is not a single building, but a cluster of rooms united by open spaces and semi-external verandahs that blend with the outdoor environments.
