already from afar, onlookers on a brno housing estate in the czech republic can spot an all-black pavilion with an unusual and abstract looking envelope. on closer inspection, the low-rise volume is actually made up of a façade using many individual seats that have been angled and fixed directly onto the structure. this distinctive pavilion is a project where a former showroom for cars has been reinterpreted as a showroom and office for a furniture company.

completed by CHYBIK + KRISTOF architects, the 550 sqm space has undergone a straightforward but dramatic makeover. the façade is now serves as an eye-catching advert in itself for the furniture company and is clad by its homogeneous product: a black seat. as a result it creates an abstract character which reflects the activity inside without the need for banner advertising. ‘what we used is a basic form is an interior chair called vicenza which the supplier delivers on a regular basis,’ explains the design team. ‘in this case, however, we used black granulate for the outdoors because it is resistant to different weather conditions, especially UV light.’

inside, the concept of the interior provides a flexible use and allows the products to be on display while employees are working in the offices. three circular galleries draped with white curtains have been integrated into the showroom to represent the three areas of production: school furniture, office furniture and design pieces. additionally, the flooring material of the circular galleries correspond to the setting that the furniture is intended for. the offices are organized along the outer edge of the building for daylight and ventilation reasons to allow the whole pavilion to work as a functional space
