Ji Yun Yao Resort by line+ integrates with the mountain landscape

Chinese studio line+ introduces Ji Yun Yao Resort in Yaoshan Village, Guangzhou, China, a hotel that is nestled in a valley once home to Yao ancestors over 300 years ago. Respecting the cultural and natural heritage of the Hakka community, the resort integrates the rhythms of the terraced mountain landscape with the cultural richness of its historical context. Rooflines with varied slopes evoke traditional village aesthetics, creating a cohesive visual language that integrates seamlessly with the natural terrain. Following the Retreat to Nature, Return to Community concept, the material palette draws inspiration from traditional Hakka settlements. Earth-toned plaster, clay tiles, and wood-colored flooring blend with the natural surroundings, while reinforced concrete structures provide durability.

honoring the cultural heritage of the hakka community in china

The team at line+ reimagines the terraced hills of the site, ancient rammed-earth structures, and serene landscapes into a space that reconnects visitors with nature. The master plan prioritizes a Planning-First, Respecting Nature approach, organizing the site with a dual-route system that combines direct access for electric vehicles with a scenic pedestrian path. The layout transitions from forested areas to a central village core, with wooden boardwalks and lakeside paths linking key functional zones. Ji Yun Yao Resort preserves and repurposes the ancestral hall and other historical structures, enriching the cultural depth of the resort. Clusters of buildings are connected by pathways, water features, and greenery, reflecting the spirit of the original village while ensuring modern functionality.

historic structures house lobbies, dining areas and private suites

The guestrooms at Ji Yun Yao Resort are designed for privacy and connection to the environment through their placement across varying elevations and orientations. Lower-level units are enclosed in private courtyards, while upper-level rooms feature expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Diverse room layouts and sizes offer guests unique spatial experiences, with multi-level platforms and landscape features ensuring organic transitions between areas. Expansive glass windows let natural light inside and offer uninterrupted views of the mountainous surroundings. Public spaces incorporate lightweight steel frames and glass facades, balancing modern comfort with the rustic charm of the village. Historic structures are repurposed for lobbies, dining areas, and private suites, maintaining their cultural significance while accommodating contemporary needs.
