cheungvogl’s design for the NEW AARCH, the new architecture school of aarhus competition is a two-storey building that provides active workshops and public exhibitions on the ground level. the upper level accommodates theoretical work and quiet reading and working areas. the new aarch reuses the existing buildings as a new social hub to connect the public with the school over food, exhibitions and events. the design integrates the existing buildings and offers them a new lease of life by transforming the former institut for (x) and the northern buildings into cafes, bookstore and meeting spaces. the existing buildings intersect with the public central exhibition spaces of the NEW AARCH, forming a new cultural and social center that connects the public life of the campus with the godsbanen.

the school building interweaves between courtyards, which are used by the students for creating large size models 

 

 

 

the proposed mixed-use development within the site area consists of three slender towers with a footprint of 470 sqm each. 10,000 sqm gfa of residential use, 15.000 sqm of total gfa, of which 7,500 sqm are proposed as hotel and serviced apartments and 7,500 sqm as live work lofts. the design proposes to densify the development with smaller footprints and slender buildings and to increase the quality of the site by maximizing green spaces to enhance the living and working environment. the two-storey car park of 9,000 sqm gfa is hidden beneath a manmade landscape. this central green park becomes an extension of the green wedge in the southern future development.

a further green landscaped area is introduced as an urban farm between the former institut for (x) and the school. trees are planted along the roads and railway bordering the site, which buffer traffic noise. NEW AARCH is designed to create flexibility, to adapt to teaching methods and to facilitate a high degree of connectivity between the school, the professionals and the society. the philosophy of engaging with society is translated in a recognizable architectural identity for the school and the city. the key objective is to design flexible working spaces for flexible working conditions that support social interactions and collaborative activities between students, professors, professionals through an open plan layout that bridges with the community.
