CEBRA architecture has been selected to construct an unobtrusive visitor center in southern denmark. skamlingsbanken, a large hill with a peak of 113 metres above sea level, is the highest point in southern jutland, and has formed the backdrop for some of the most important speeches in danish history. the visitor center is part of a larger plan to reestablish this historic setting as a popular public gathering point.

the competition brief, issued by the municipality of kolding, called for a design that united the historic context with the ice age landscape. set within the rolling terrain, CEBRA’s design functions as an architectural gateway that both gathers and communicates a variety of local experience. in addition to the café, the building is capable of hosting exhibitions and teaching workshops, and also forms a natural starting point for hikes in the region.

the scheme’s overall exhibition concept seeks to communicate the forces of both nature and speech. once inside, visitors hear the voices of advocates for the danish language, pioneers of the feminist movement, and the atmosphere of victory after the end of the second world war. guests are also able to share their opinions on current topics, using the region’s historic events as a contemporary lens.

in our proposal, the center becomes an integrate part of the landscape,’ explains carsten primdahl, architect and founding partner at CEBRA. ‘landscape and exhibition melt together in an architecture that frames, stages and articulates the natural surroundings, and where the visitor experiences a both contemplative and sensuous connection to the area and its history.’
