candian practices menkès shooner dagenais letourneux architectes (MSDL) and provencher_roy architectes have collaborated in the renovation of the casino de montréal. the project, which took four years to complete, involved simplifying the building’s interior volumes in order to improve the quality and flow of the venue’s layout.

the scheme involves a comprehensive review of circulation routes, reprogramming space around a circular hub where the site’s recreational areas converge. the gambling areas are located around the vertical column lit by a big mesh of aluminum slats, with panoramic elevators on the south side and a staircase to the north.

the design respects the identity of exiting structure – the former french pavilion from the 1967 world exposition – using the same original architectural language to redesign the casino’s primary entrance. while the new galleries housing the administrative offices were placed in a new landscaping that honors expo 67’s former basins and watersheds.

‘we are proud we succeeded in finding the former expo 67 pavilion’s character, which now makes the casino de montréal a gambling establishment that is unique in the world and renowned for its original character’, commented claude provencher, founding partner of provencher_roy architectes.
