in the middle of a dense urban neighborhood in tokyo, local practice case-real completed a single family residence enclosed by houses on three sides and open to the north. to meet the client’s wish for a southern-facing living room with plenty of natural sunlight, the architects pushed the structure to the north lot line as far as possible while still leaving room for a compact car parking space. in order to bring natural sunlight into a room with limited open space around it, the living area was designed as the hexagonal focal point of the house with a pitched roof and windows facing almost all sides that accept sunlight no matter the time of day. the monochromatic color scheme present in the exposed timber beams and white walls is tastefully offset by the richness of a wooden floor and vibrant yellow sliding wall panel leading to one of the bedrooms.
