in charlevoix, an eastern region of the quebec province, local practice cargo architecture has completed a spacious dwelling capable of accommodating up to 14 guests. set within a forest clearing, ‘villa boréale’ is set on a private site, aligning itself with its natural surroundings. working closely with the entrepreneurial clients — a young couple in their 30s — the design team developed a scheme inspired by scandinavian cottages and barns. this influence resonates in the material choices, with pale tones used in tandem with more natural textures such as wood and concrete. black metal cladding creates a visual contrast that highlights the smooth matte finish of the steel, and the natural grain of the eastern white cedar.

the size and position of each window has been carefully considered in order to highlight particular views and sightlines. the location of each aperture also ensures constant light throughout the day, while providing the required amount of residential privacy. a sheltered porch is found at the threshold of the home, offering an outdoor space to enjoy the picturesque surroundings and its wildlife.

the spacious property is capable of accommodating up to 14 guests

despite constraints relating to the floor area, a total of 4 bedrooms and 14 sleeping places have been included. three bathrooms are also part of the plan, with potential space for a fourth to be added at a later date. the internal configuration offers simple circulation routes, with a flexible mezzanine level that can provide a range of functions — a master bedroom, a playroom for kids, a reading corner, or a quiet place to nurse a young baby.
