cantilevered hammock completes the off-grid 'lost whiskey' cabin by greenspur in the US

the ‘lost whiskey’ cabin by US-based firm, greenspur, is an off-grid, 15 sqm (160 sqf) holiday dwelling, complete with a cantilevered hammock. located in delaplane, virginia, the project explores the limits of slowing down, offering a space to unplug from technology and immerse oneself in nature. the all-concrete cabin is virtually maintenance free thanks to the crackling fire that heats the hot tub, solar panels, cisterns, murphy bed, shower and compost toilet.all images by mitch allen photography

designed and built by greenspur, ‘lost whiskey’ cabin combines scandinavian minimalism with vernacular aesthetics. the compact holiday home features raw concrete walls, floors, and ceilings, complemented by a steel chimney and window frames. the outdoor terrace at the front is complete with the cantilevered hammock that further immerses residents in nature, and a hot tub that is heated by a crackling fire.

the cabin is designed as an escape from technology and the rush of modern everyday life, while it seeks to provide the grounds for some quality time on the mountain together with family, friends, and loved ones. ‘the first iphone was released in 2007 and in less than 20 years there ain’t much the damn thing won’t do: from ordering pizza, to a real time global news feed, to documenting every inch of our lives all in 4K resolution,’ says the team at greenspur.‘I’m addicted; my kids are addicted; and I don’t think it’s all been good for our family. the lost whiskey project is about exploring our personal limits of slowing down and simplifying. it’s about the value of time and experiences over information and accumulation.’
