BZP arquitetura creates a light-filled art gallery space in a são paulo garden

located in a quiet garden space in são paulo, brazil, BZP arquitetura has formed ‘galeria oboé‘ as a special place to enjoy and contemplate art. designed for the client’s own collection, the space has been built within the grounds of a private residence to span an area of 1130 ft2 (105 m2). filled with natural light and designed with an element of introspection, the project creates the optimum display for the many interesting pieces.

the intervention by BZP arquitetura connects to the house by a winding path of stones. from viewing the gallery from the garden, the intervention gives the impression of occupying only one level. however, upon entering the space, visitors are met by a wide timber staircase that descends to a lower ground level. this design provides a successful element of introspection, making the structure more subtle in the landscape.

inside, the gallery is filled with natural light thanks to the large glazed panels that make up the metal-framed structure. the interior space is characterized by white walls and ceilings, complemented by an exposed concrete floor. on the lower level, glazed screens can be opened out to the garden, bringing an element of nature into the gallery by the wall of greenery that defines the boundary of the site. as in a museum, the spaces are air conditioned and use rolôs with screens of solar protection in the windows of the space, with double right for preservation of the works of art.
