buro511 imagines its villa X as a stack of rounded, glowing volumes

moscow-based studio buro511 envisions its luminous villa X. the private residential building is designed for a young client who works in the space industry and sought the atmosphere of a landing spaceship. while the client also enjoys yoga and buddhist culture, the house is expressed with a dichotomy of warm minimalism and space-age style. these contrasting design languages are evident throughout the project — its monumental, curving profile of translucent fiberglass overgrown with lush plant life. these soft lines and smooth geometries are continued along the interior with a warm wooden finish.

buro511 sculpts its villa X as an assemblage of elongated, vertically stacking volumes. this stacking strategy results from the unusual, triangular-shaped boundaries of the plot. the entire perimeter of the house is clad in an energy-efficient glazing and a curtain fiberglass facade that folds outward to introduce full-height windows. the villa X has two occupiable rooftops, one accessed from the master bedroom, with the other covering the uppermost level. expressing interest in yoga and buddhism, the client requested that the team at buro511 make use of buddhist motives throughout the interior, together with warm textures of wood and plants. while the hardwood flooring is engraved with a solar system detail, calligraphic motifs are engraved as a pattern along the walls.
